Secrets of Hellen
She was born in Donora, Pennsylvania
She loved to bowl and was not a bad golfer
Growing up she had a dog named Spotty and Curly
She’s allergic to shellfish and strawberries
Hellen graduated High School when she was just 16 years old!
She was an original collector of Radko Christmas ornaments and Byer’s Choice carolers
She has helped a number of college bound kids whom she did not know that well receive scholarships at Akron University
She loved listening to Ray Horner on WAKR in the mornings
She had 10 scholarships when she graduated high school and chose Akron U.
Forget the internet. She could track down anything from any store on the phone
While never graduating from Akron U, she received an honorary degree in 2006
She played a doll in her grade school Christmas play
She has one not one or even two Akron Beautification Awards, but ten!
Her nicknames growing up were “Boots” and “Sunshine”
She sang with a band at the Summit Hotel in Union Town, Ohio
Her favorite vacation was a trip to Williamsburg
She met her husband, Bob Mitten, when she acted as a model for a photo shoot.
Hellen likes to clean and do laundry- a lot
Her Mother tied her up in the backyard when she was younger so she wouldn’t wander away
Her high school nuns wanted her to become a nun telling her they had her “bonnet”! (Hellen didn’t want to have to wear the same “dress” every day)
Hellen was married once before to Nick Lazor, founder of the World Series of Golf, who tragically passed away only a year after they were married
Her sisters, Bid and Dorrie, nicknamed her Bub
She craves McDonald’s Sausage Egg Mcuffins
She had the opportunity to become Harvey Firestone's secretary but had to turn the job down because she couldn't drive
Hellen volunteered at The Florence Crittenton Home in downtown Akron, whose mission was to help unwed teen mothers forge a better future for themselves
She never colored her hair. It's naturally white.
Hellen hates to fly and hasn't been on a plane in almost 20 years!
She was voted Honorary Ambassador of West Point Market
Believe it or not, Hellen was a big LeBron James fan
Hellen’s favorite song was “Somewhere” from West Side Story
One of her favorite dates when she was single was having drinks at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York.
She and Al Francesconi were crowned King and Queen of the St. Peter’s Church May Dance when they were both 17.
She loved going to out to dinner with the girls from West Point.
She is a rabid Black Sabbath fan and has an autographed picture of Ozzy Osbourne (OK, this is not true. She always has WAKR radio on at home and loves listening to Ray Horner's morning show)
